Unit Assessment: A Reconstruction Newspaper
As a summative assessment for this unit on Reconstruction, students will create a Reconstruction Newspaper. They will be given information on the assignment during the third lesson of the unit – after they have done the introductory virtual field trip but before they really dive into the material. Students will work on this assignment as homework throughout the unit, doing research in their textbooks and during library time. They will also have class time at the end of the unit to work with computers to type and format their Reconstruction Newspapers.
These newspapers will show each individual student’s understanding of the Reconstruction era in Virginia. Each newspaper should be formatted like a newspaper and should include:
· A story or opinion piece about economics and new technologies
· A story or opinion piece about Virginia’s natural resources
· A story or opinion piece about freed slaves
· A story or opinion piece about either a white person or a Native American
· Two stories or opinion pieces of the student’s’ choice
· One map
· One graph
· One cartoon
· Other images, as desired and relevant
Students will also complete a self-reflection on their Reconstruction Newspapers, and their overall achievement during the Reconstruction unit. (This addresses the intrapersonal intelligence, and encourages students to reflect on their own work.) The questions they should answer are:
· How do you feel overall about your Reconstruction Newspaper? Why?
· Do you feel you did your best work? Why or why not?
· What do you like best about your Newspaper? Why?
· What do you like least? Why?
· How can you summarize Reconstruction in Virginia in 20 words or less?
· Do you have any questions or confusions about Reconstruction that you would still like answered?
Students should also be given their own copy of the rubric and give themselves a score.
The teacher will take into account student’s opinions and their final product when giving students a grade on the unit and for the Reconstruction Newspaper assignment.
